Quirky Quad

It takes some figuring to understand why a construction crew would enclose 6 square yards of grass in a rectangle of cement. After looking at things awhile, one notices that the southern rim of Quirky Quad (foremost strip of cement in this photo) must have been added later to already-existing sidewalk (now the northern rim of Quirky Quad). Note that at the northeast corner, the cement is a different color.

Evidently, the original sidewalk (now the northern rim of Quirky Quad) allowed people in wheelchairs and parents with strollers to attain downhill velocities close to those of the Daytona 500, so, an alternative route was added. (Note the steep incline at the northwest corner of Quirky Quad.)

Apparently, at that time, authorities saw fit to provide not only for a detour around Suicide Hill on what is now the northern rim of Quirky Quad, but also a curb cut to cross 10th St. from north to south (lower left corner of photo). Too bad the painted crosswalk is 100 yards to the east.
